Fruits And Vegetables Instead Of Drugs

Fruits and vegetables as medicine.

Dr. Garth Davis from Houston Texas has made a revolutionary movement towards healthy eating in his medical practice. Just as the father of medicine, Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food,” Dr. David has really put that ancient teaching into practice by writing out prescriptions for his patients to the local “Farmacy.”

Dr. Davis is the medical director of bariatric surgery at the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. After noticing a trend of poor health in his patients, he started prescribing only fruits and vegetables instead of pharmaceutical drugs.

Dr. Garth Davis has found that, after years of treating people for obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes, much of it was caused by the patient’s lifestyle.”chron.com

So far, patients have responded really well to this new type of treatment.

“As physicians, we perform surgery or prescribe medications to our patients to make them well,” said Davis. “Why not also educate them on healthy eating and make fresh fruits and vegetables readily available?”

Dr. Davis is so passionate about what he is doing, that he has teamed up with Kristina Gabrielle Carrillo-Bucaram, the founder of Rawfully Organic (the nation’s largest nonprofit organic food co-op) to make sure his patients were only eating the best.

Together, this great team – with the help of the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center Hospital – have opened what they call the “Farmacy Stand.”

This Organic food stand is open from 10am-2pm every Wednesday in the lobby of the hospital in Texas. When Dr. Davis writes a prescription for his patients to go to the “Farmacy,” they get $10 off of a $25 box of fresh, organic produce.

The Memorial Hermann Foundation graciously provided the funds to build the stand,  as well as fund the $10 off deal for each patient who uses the stand.

Not everyone has caught on so quickly to this revolutionary concept.

“I have people come up to me and tell me that farmacy was misspelled,” said Renee Garrett, the senior patient access rep at the Davis Clinic. “I tell them that it is spelled correctly. We get organic vegetables from farms and then the people want me to tell them more about what we are doing.” Garrett helps run the stand every Wednesday.

These incredible prescription boxes contain a bounty of fruit such as apples, bananas and oranges as well as vegetables like romaine lettuce, carrots, celery and tomatoes.

“We have actual prescription pads that we are starting to give out to doctors that they can use,” said Davis.

The Farmacy has been open since October 2014 and has changed the lives of countless individuals. Wouldn’t it be incredible if every hospital adopted a program like this?

“I think a few other doctors have written prescriptions,” continued Davis. “I would like to get more doctors writing the prescriptions. Hippocrates said, ‘Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.’ Produce is medicine. The vegetables and fruits are an alternative for use in treating diseases.”

Dr. Davis is leading by example and hopefully many other doctors will jump at the opportunity to start doing the same for their patients in the near future.

“The concept of Garth’s Farmacy links directly to Memorial Hermann’s vision to advance health,” said Keith Alexander, CEO of Memorial Hermann Memorial City. “We understand the value of good nutrition, diet and exercise and we fully support Garth and the folks at Rawfully Organic as they work to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle.”
